Tenants to Homeowners want to turn the lot at 25th and Ridge Court into 14 units for moderate to low income senior citizens. The nonprofit organization asked county commissioners Wednesday night to donate the piece of land located behind United Way to the project. The group says the county would benefit from taxes on the property, and seniors could pay lower rent.
Commissioners told the group’s board members that they would give them the land, but not until they receive approval from the city. The rental homes would include both one and two bedrooms units. They would be one-story homes in order to accommodate those who have outgrown the ability to live in a multi-story building.
Those opposed are concerned about the drainage issues in the neighborhood. They say the vacant lot gives them enough problems with flooding and sewage as it is, and building even more homes would be problematic.
Project supporters say the rental homes would give potential residents a comfortable place to live. Board members say it would benefit the community because there’s nothing else in Lawrence quite like it.
