LAWRENCE - Traditionally, some people like to wait until after Thanksgiving to begin their holiday shopping. But this year, you might not want to wait too long, especially if your little ones have put some of the popular toys on their wish lists.
Stores throughout Lawrence are already stocking their shelves with what workers believe will be the hottest toys of the year. At the Toy Store in Lawrence, Christmas shopping season is in full swing.
According to the National Retail Federation, holiday shoppers plan to shell out more than $700 on gifts this year, down slightly from last year. Despite that, forecasters still believe holiday retail sales will grow by 2.8 percent in November and December.
Many parents don't plan on slowing down their buying, but they are planning on bargain hunting. The good news is many of this year's hottest toys are under $30, including Fisher Price's Rock and Roll Elmo. For those looking to spend a little more on the high-tech gadgets, LeapPad Explorer is expected to be another top seller. Other anticipated big sellers this year include the Doggie Doo Game and the Furreal Cookie. Legos and Bob the Builder construction toys are also on the list, along with Dance Star Mickey.
If you're not ready to fork over the cash for Christmas presents just yet, many popular stores, including Wal-Mart and K-Mart, are offering layaway this year.
