LAWRENCE - Pet World customers are used to being greeted with the sound of chirping birds as they enter the store. On Monday, it was a different sound.
A local glass company is repairing damage after a customer plowed into the front of the building at about 9:30 a.m. "We heard this crash," Manager Chris Campbell said. "Basically, the entire front of the store shifted two-feet to the right; I realized a woman had just crashed into the front."
A worker had been standing at the cash register before the accident happened, but had luckily moved to another part of the store before the shards of glass went flying.
What makes this all a little odd is what happened after the crash. "She pulled away, backed up and pulled back in and walked up to the front of the store and came in like nothing happened," Campbell said. Campbell says the 88-year-old woman didn't rush in to apologize or flee the scene. She simply strolled in looking for food for her dog.
When they asked her about the accident, Campbell says she did say she was sorry and thought maybe she mixed up the gas and break pedals. "It could have been really bad," Campbell said. "Fortunately no one was hurt; she was kind of oblivious to the whole thing."
Although there were birds and turtles at the front of the store when the crash happened, no animals were injured either.
