By 6News Staff on April 30, 2012

LAWRENCE - The Douglas County Health Department says results from the Community Health Assessment are now available.

The department spent six months collecting data to plan for future community health efforts. They used a Local Public Health Assessment in December, a community health survey in February, focus groups, and more to identify needs in the area.

Here are some of the common themes they found:

  • Lack of access to affordable, healthy foods
  • Limited access to dental services
  • Insufficient access to health care and other services
  • Poverty/few job opportunities
  • Limited access to safe, affordable housing
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Lack of access to health insurance coverage
  • Disparities in health care outcomes and quality of life
  • Inadequate access to mental health services

We will have more on this story tonight on 6News at 6:00.
