Private papers of 'Star Trek' writer donated to KU

Lawrence - Private letters, manuscripts and other papers belonging to the man credited with inventing the "live long and prosper" Vulcan phrase for "Star Trek" have been donated to the University of Kansas.

The collection belongs to the late Theodore Sturgeon. Books, papers, manuscripts and correspondence belonging to the the science fiction writer will now live at the Kenneth Spencer Research Library at KU. The Library is also home to the Center for the Study of Science Fiction, which hands out the Sturgeon Award for best short science fiction annually at the Campbell Conference.

Sturgeon's collection includes:

  • Original manuscript and multiple film treatment of Sturgeon's best-known novel, "More Than Human."
  • His notes and outline for "Amok Time," one of two "Star Trek" episodes he wrote.
  • Correspondence with noted science fiction editors and authors, including John W. Campbell, Robert Heinlein, Edgar Pangborn, Harlan Ellison, Isaac Asimov, Kurt Vonnegut, Gene Roddenberry and T.H. White.
