Lawrence - A Lawrence man escapes with his life after a terrifying accident Wednesday night. It happened in the 1700 block of Tennessee Street. Robbie Struble says his roommate is still shaken up after coming face to face with a drunk driver. According to police, 21-year Mitchell Friesen was driving his Volkswagen south on Tennessee street when he tried to turn east on 17th. Friesen lost control of his car, jumped the curb, plowed through a sign in the yard and then directly into a bedroom on the first floor. Struble’s roommate was in his bed at the time of the accident.
"He just thought someone wrecked outside,” says Struble. “He got flung out of his bed, so we ran into his room to see if he's ok, than ran outside. The guy was already out of his car.”
Struble says Friesen appeared drunk and disoriented. Struble and his roommates immediately called police and tried to comfort their roommate who somehow escaped unharmed. Shortly after the accident, Friesen was arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence and reckless driving. He’s due in court on April 25th.
